Why European Cars Run Hot
BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen engines are engineered to run at higher operating temperatures than most domestic vehicles — often 105–110°C — to improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. That design works beautifully when every cooling component is healthy, but it leaves almost no buffer when something starts to fail.

1. Water Pump
The water pump is the heart of your cooling system. On many BMW and Audi models the impeller is plastic, and it can crack or spin freely on its shaft — meaning the pump turns but no longer moves coolant. The temperature gauge spikes within minutes.
Listen for a whining or grinding noise from the front of the engine, and look for coolant residue (often pink or blue) around the pump area.
2. Thermostat
A thermostat stuck closed will cause rapid overheating; stuck open will cause poor heater performance and a check-engine light. Summer heat accelerates the wear on the thermostat's wax element. On most European cars the thermostat is integrated into a housing — replace the whole unit, not just the valve.
3. Radiator and Cooling Fan
Plastic radiator end tanks crack with age and heat cycling. The electric cooling fan is what saves you in traffic — when airflow from driving stops, the fan keeps coolant temperature down. A failed fan or fan control module means your car cools fine on the highway but overheats the moment you stop.
4. Coolant Hoses and Expansion Tank
The expansion (overflow) tank is plastic and pressurized — a very common failure point on BMW and Mercedes. It develops hairline cracks that weep coolant under pressure. Hoses harden and split at the connections.
